Stevens MRT Station is an interchange station connecting Singapore’s Thomson East Coast Line (TEL) to the Downtown Line (DTL). It is situated in a prime residential property area, with mid-rise apartments and educational establishments such as Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and St. Joseph’s Institution in its vicinity.

Early site studies considered the catchment of commuters, as well as interchange connections, while minimising the impact to a densely built-up area. This resulted in the station box being placed under the main thoroughfare of Stevens Road - to connect directly with the DTL station already positioned along Stevens Road, and facilitate smooth transfers between MRT lines. A total of five station entrances add to the ease of movement around the Bukit Timah area in which the station is located in, as commuters and pedestrians can access not just the station, but both sides of Stevens Road through an underground link built beneath a canal.

Each station entrance greets commuters with a deep overhanging roof that appears to float over the entrance steps, drawing commuters in while bringing the scale of the station entrance and vent shafts to a human scale. The ventilation shafts are located behind the deep overhanging roof to reduce their visibility from the road; and by screen walls that encase the ancillary structures. Terracotta tile cladding is used around the shafts and cooling towers to reduce the scale of these structures, while relating to the surrounding residential vernacular with its warm colour and materiality. The language of the screens is also continued into the station and onto the walls surrounding the platform, to provide visual consistency.
