Lentor station is one of the stations along the northern stretch of the Thomson-East Coast Line, which are designed to have a “sense of place” by reflecting the qualities of their context. The MRT line runs underground along private housing estates, with the station entrances opening en grade at the intersection of Yio Chu Kang Road and Lentor Drive. The station entrances are strategically located at the main catchment points to serve the neighbourhood while fitting within the tight roadside table space.
The approach to these estates is through Yio Chu Kang Road, a wide thoroughfare framed by majestic rain trees that filter light through their wide canopy. The design of the station takes reference from the organic form of the greenery, with the curves in plan informed by the path that draws passengers in from the surrounding neighbourhood.
The columns are tree-like structures rising and branching out to support the extensive roof. The timber screens filter light into the station, just like the rain tree canopies, while lending an order to the organic form, a reminder of the train’s precision engineering. The granite walls at the entrances give a hint of the rectilinear concourse form and language below.
